"Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine" Department

 

Since 2010, S.Seifullin Kazakh Agro Technical University was one of the first in Kazakhstan to train specialists in the field of "Plant protection and quarantine". In 2013, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy. Since May 2022, the department has been called the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine.

The main activities of the department are teaching disciplines and training future specialists in the field of biology, plant protection and quarantine. The department is producing in the field of education of 6B08 – "Agriculture and bioresources" and the areas of training of the specialty are B077-"Phytosanitary safety", B050-Biology, M131 – "Phytosanitary monitoring", D131 – "Phytosanitary technologies".

According to the staff schedule, the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine consists of 26 teachers, including 2 Doctors of Sciences, 6 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), 8 candidates of Sciences and 7 Masters of Sciences. From the auxiliary staff, 1 senior laboratory assistant and 2 laboratory assistants work at the department.

The basis of educational programs in the field of plant protection and quarantine are courses: general and agricultural entomology; general and agricultural phytopathology; harmful nematodes, mites, rodents; chemical and biological plant protection; phytosanitary monitoring and prediction of the development and spread of harmful organisms; plant quarantine; plant immunity, etc. Multilingual training is conducted in the direction of preparation of the master's degree M131 – "Phytosanitary monitoring" and PhD's degree D131 – "Phytosanitary technologies".

The Department of teaching and teaching staff annually produces educational and methodological literature. In the quality of newly developed textbooks "phytosanitary technologies of cultivation of agricultural crops", "Technology of processing and storage of crop production", "Innovative technologies in teaching of disciplines on specialty "Plant protection and quarantine", "Protecting crops in decorative cultivation", "Chemical plant protection", "Biological agents of plant protection", "Innovative technologies for detecting common parasites of fish, amphibians and reptiles" and others.

The organization of the educational process includes methodological seminars, open lectures, master classes and round tables.  So, the teachers of the department conducted methodological seminars on the topics "Organization and conduct of professional practice", "Research work with students at the bachelor's and master's degree stages", "Innovative diagnostic methods in biology", master classes "Preparative forms of pesticides and methods of their application", open video lectures "Diagnosis of virus diseases of potato plants by immunochromatographic test", "Ecology of harmful organisms".

For educational and scientific purposes, 5 laboratories are used (plant biotechnology, phytosanitary optimization, phytopathology, entomology and a specialized agrochemical laboratory), one phytotron and 2 research centers (scientific and innovative center for phytosanitary monitoring, plant protection and quarantine, scientific and educational innovation center for agrobiological research).

The herbarium fund, which includes collections of plants from different ecosystems of different regions of the Republic, has been created and is being unified according to international standards at the department.

The scientific research carried out by the department is included in the Republican programs on priority areas of development of agricultural science and has both theoretical and practical significance. The teaching staff of the department actively conducts research, involving young scientists. The department carries out 2 funded projects through the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A new direction of studying the phytosanitary condition of ornamental and flower crops and ornamental crops in general has been started and is being intensively developed at the department. In this regard, a collection fund of living plants was founded for scientific research and as a methodological support. This direction is supported by scientific ties with the Botanical Garden of Nur-Sultan, JSC "Zelenstroy" and other economic entities.

The staff of the department has published more than 20 scientific articles in the journals of the Scopus and WebofScience database in recent years, more than 50 articles in the journals of the list of the Committee for Control in the Field of Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, received 9 innovative patents.

The research department uses domestic and foreign research infrastructure. Joint research and scientific expeditions are conducted with scientists of Kazakhstan, primarily with the Kazakh Research Institute for Plant Protection and Quarantine. There is close cooperation with relevant organizations within the country. According to the concluded agreements, students undergo production and research practices on the basis of the Kazakh Research Institute of Grain Farming named after A.I. Barayev, the Zh. Zhyembayev Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine, Kazakh Research Institute of Agriculture and Plant Growing, branches of the Republican Methodological Center for Phytosanitary Diagnostics and Forecasts of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, RSE "Phytosanitary", GU "Republican Plant Quarantine Center" and other agricultural enterprises. The heads of the practices are teachers of the department and, along with this, specialists from enterprises and institutions, thereby expanding the introduction of dual education. Students of the 2nd-4th year are interning on the campus of S.Seifullin Kazakh Agro Technical University.

Graduates of the specialties in their professional activities will be able to realize themselves in the public service in the field of plant protection and quarantine; scientific and production structures of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan; all types of agricultural formations of plant profile; centers for phytosanitary diagnostics and forecasts; plant quarantine centers; biomethod laboratories, biofactories and biolaboratories of a wide profile; border quarantine posts; various commercial firms.

History of the Department

In the history of the University, from 1963 to 1973 there was a Department “Plant protection“ ( the head is Roktanen L. P.), which later was transformed into the Department “Horticulture and plant protection“ (the head is Shepetkov N. G.). Specialists who made a great contribution to plant protection in the Department were professionals Kostromitin V., A. I. Calis, E. D. Smetanina, L. P. Roktanen, L. P. Novikova, M. F.

Plant protection disciplines were taught for various agronomic specialties, including in recent years in the composition of departments: agro-ecology and agricultural chemistry; crop production. In 2010, the Department "Plant" produced the first set of students majoring in 5B081100- "Plant protection and quarantine". In January 2013 the Department "Crop production, agriculture and plant protection" was reorganized into 2 departments - "Farming and crop production"(acting head isStybaev G. Zh.) and "Plant protection and quarantine" (acting head is A.K. Tuleeva).

Currently the plant protection and quarantinein Kazakhstan is considered as the most important sector, providing food and phytosanitary security of the country. Modern plant protection is one of the fastest growing areas in agriculture. In the conditions of hardening of requirements of ecology of the open global market, it is necessary that the phytosanitary service was correctly decided the issues of preservation of yield and quality against pests, diseases and weeds, were guided in a broad range of pesticides.

S. Seifullin Kazakh agrotechnical University is one of the first in the country began preparation of specialists in "Plant protection and quarantine".

In 2013, for the first time in the history of the university in the Central and Northern region of the country, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine was opened, which included highly qualified teachers. In the same year, a magistracy was opened in the specialty 6M081100 - "Plant Protection and Quarantine" and the first set of undergraduates was made. From the 2014-2015 academic year, master's studies are conducted in multilingual groups.

In August 2015, the license for the preparation PhD doctors in 6D081100- "Plant protection and quarantine"was received.In 2015 the Department on all three levels of higher education successfully passed the state certification for a period of 5 years. Since May 2022, after joining the Department of Biological Sciences, the department has been called "Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine".

Short description scope of knowledge

This stage of postgraduate education specialization focuses on the study of issues related to the protection of decorative plants from pests, diseases and weeds with scientific and industrial points of view. For the successful mastering in the specialty, master’s students acquire trough knowledge on the new method of plant protection against harmful organisms. Study current state and prospects of development of plant protection. Learn phytosanitary technology of cultivation of agricultural crops.

Brief description of skills

On completing the course the masters develop skills: the development of phytosanitary techniques; independently conduct phytosanitary monitoring; to develop a set of protective measures of decorative plants against pests, diseases and weeds and quarantine objects. Masters may conduct research work in the field of plant protection against harmful organisms, to conduct scientific and pedagogical work in higher education, to realize themselves in the state service in plant protection and quarantine.

Summary of the programme

The basis of the educational programme of the specialty make courses: Phytosanitary monitoring and prognosis in ornamental plant growing; Diseases and pests of ornamental flower crops and other. Master’s students have the opportunity to undertake compulsory foreign scientific internship in Universities of near and far abroad.

B077-"Phytosanitary safety"

Qualification - Bachelor of agriculture in "Plant protection and quarantine"

Short description scope of knowledge

This specialty is aimed at studying issues related to the protection of plants from harmful organisms (pests, diseases, weeds) cause economic damage to crop production. For the successful development of the specialty, students receive deep knowledge on species composition, biology, ecology of harmful and quarantine organisms and control measures against them.

Brief description of skills

After completing the course specialists acquire the skills to conduct phytosanitary monitoring, complex protective measures of agricultural plants against pests, diseases and weeds, including quarantine objects; conducting all stages of quarantine inspections at border checkpoints. Asweel may be employed in the state service of plant protection and quarantine, research and production structures of the Ministry of agriculture, all types of agricultural enterprises in crop profile, centers of phytosanitary diagnostics and forecasts, centres of plant quarantine, control and toxicological laboratories.

Summary of the programme

The basis of the educational programme of the specialty make courses: general and agricultural entomology; general and agricultural phytopathology; harmful nematodes, mites, rodents; chemical and biological plant protection; plant quarantine; plant immunity; phytosanitary monitoring and the forecast of development and distribution of harmful organisms of agricultural crops and others. Students annually have the opportunity to participate in national and international competitions among Universities, and for one semester to study on academic mobility in the leading Universities of the country and abroad.

Short description scope of knowledge

Biology is the science that studies life and living organisms, including their structure, functions, growth, origin, evolution, distribution and systematics. The branches of biology vary widely from biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics to physiology and ecology.

Bachelors of natural Sciences in the specialty 6B05103-"Biology" possess education in the field of natural sciences, analytical and communication skills, research skills and technical skills applicable to a wide range of professions in the field of science, health, business, public administration and education.

Graduates of this educational program are proficient in the methods of molecular genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics; they will acquire in-depth knowledge of natural and information sciences, English.

The educational program "Biology" was developed in accordance with the NRK and professional standards, in accordance with the Dublin Descriptors and the European Qualifications Framework, on the basis of the State Mandatory Standard of Higher Education approved by the Order of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 31, 2018 (No. 604) and in accordance with the classifier of training areas with higher and postgraduate education (Approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 569ot on October 13, 2018.

PhD students acquire skills in the development of phytosanitary technologies, independently conduct phytosanitary monitoring and to develop a set of protective measures of agricultural plants from pests, diseases, weeds and quarantine objects. Acquire skills of conducting research work in the field of plant protection against harmful organisms, for scientific and pedagogical work in higher educational institutions. In the future they can realize themselves in scientific activity in research institutes and in the state service of plant protection and quarantine.

A summary of the programme

The foundation of the educational program of doctoral studies in the specialty make courses: molecular and genetic methods of protecting agricultural crops against harmful organisms; ensuring international security quarantine; scientific and methodological basis of pest risk analysis in plant quarantine; methodology of forest protection and forest plantations against pests; phytosanitary control of pests and diseases of fruit-berry cultures and grapes, etc. PhD students undertake compulsory foreign scientific internship in Universities of near and far abroad.

Scientific and innovative activity

The department has 25 teachers, including 2 Doctors of Sciences, 6 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), 8 candidates of Sciences and 7 Masters of Sciences.

Currently, the degree of teaching staff at the department is 70%.

- Scientific and technical program 8 of the PCF "Building a decision-making system for the production of basic types of agricultural crops based on the adaptation of the DSSAT model for the growth and development of agricultural crops, an integrated management system for the production of livestock products based on Smart technologies with the formation of an information base of scientific and technical documentation on agro-technologies for agro-industrial entities in order to create Smart-systems in agriculture" within the framework of program-targeted financing of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2021-2023.

- Scientific and technical program jointly with LLP "Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine named after Zh.Zhiembayev" 5P/21 "Development and improvement of integrated protection systems for fruit, vegetable, grain, fodder, legumes and plant quarantine", according to the technical task "Development of methods for predicting the spread of harmful and especially dangerous harmful organisms on territories of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (especially dangerous harmful organisms – Hessian fly, Colorado potato beetle, cabbage moth, septoria; harmful organisms – black beetles, nutcrackers; quarantine weed – creeping mustard)" within the framework of program-targeted financing of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2021-2023.

- International scientific program with the People's Republic of China No. 3M/21: "Creation of promising potato lines based on genetic resources of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kazakhstan". Scientific supervisor – Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor V.T. Khasanov.

The scientific research carried out by the department is included in the Republican programs on priority areas of development of agricultural science and has both theoretical and practical significance. The degree of participation of the teaching staff in the implementation of the above–mentioned topics is 100%.

According to the results of research for 2015-2022, the staff of the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine published articles in the databases Web of Science - 3, Scopus - 20, RSCI - 25, KKSON - 30, scientific conferences – 15. And also, 7 monographs, textbooks and manuals - 7, production recommendations - 7, methodological guidelines - 2 were published. 14 innovative patents and utility model patents were obtained.

International cooperation

The department has agreements with international organizations of the far and near abroad. The university has a department of the Bologna process and academic mobility, which fully regulates the mobility of students and teaching staff. If in 2014 6 students of the specialty were trained under the academic mobility program, then in 2015 8 students were trained, and in 2016-2020 2 students were trained annually in academic mobility at the Krakow Agrarian University and the Hugo Kollantai University in Poland. In 2019, 1 student of the specialty completed an internship under the Logo program in Germany, Baden-Württemberg, the city of Mengen, the Obsthof Kiechle farm.

In the period 2018-2022, 8 teachers of the department were trained under the program Adaptation under the supervision of Anselme Bruno (Lyceum Fenelon, Paris, France) in teaching biological disciplines: Molecular and cellular Biology, Genetics, ontogenesis and phylogeny, General Biology of organisms. 2 teachers of the department took ITEC courses in India.

The Department has international relations with foreign universities and chemical companies: AgroParisTech (Paris, France), Claas Academy (Harsewinkel BR Deutschland); University of California at Davis (USA, Davis); University of Ben-Gurion University (Israel, Tel Aviv); Krakow Agrarian University (Poland, Krakow), Peking University (China, Beijing); Moscow State University (Russia); Novosibirsk State University (Russia); Research Institute of the South-East (Russia, Saratov); Research Institute of Agriculture (Russian Federation, Saratov); Research Institute of Leguminous Crops (Russian Federation, Orel); Synqenta (Switzerland), Bayer, BASF (Germany), LeightonAgrio (Hungary), August, Silk Agrochem (Russia). In addition, a bilateral memorandum was signed with the Plovdiv Agrarian University (Bulgaria, Plovdiv) on the bilateral training of undergraduates in the specialty M131 – "Phytosanitary monitoring".

Student life

At the department, the educational process and educational work are united and have a common focus. Educational work with students is carried out during the educational process in accordance with the plan of educational work approved at the department. The main task is to train a qualified specialist who meets international standards and is able to navigate the market conditions. Curators of student groups from among the teaching staff are responsible for educational work.

Students of the specialty take an active part in university, city and other events. Meetings with managers and specialists of specialized organizations are organized for students with an invitation to give lectures and conduct excursions.

The international program "Students of Syngenta Kazakhstan" has great prospects in terms of practical training of students.There is a permanent student circle "Phytodoctor". It consists of students of 2-4 courses. Educational work is carried out through the prism of the specialty, this is the involvement of students in research work, consultations and other forms of circle work.

Nonresident students live in student dormitories No. 5 and No. 8 with good living conditions.

Biology Olympiad among schoolchildren of Astana

On April 21, 2023, the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine organized a traditional city school Biology Olympiad among Astana schoolchildren. Registration of the Olympiad participants took place at the Faculty of Agronomy, a total of 197 students of grades 10-11 from 65 schools of the city participated, 23 of which were with the Russian language of instruction. In the assembly hall of the faculty, before the start, vocational guidance work was carried out by teachers Arynov B, Bulekbaeva L. booklets were distributed to participants and teachers of the school. Dean of the faculty G.Zh Stybaev and head of the department A.K. Sibataev made a welcoming speech to the students, who briefly told about the achievements of the faculty and the department, wished success to the participants of the Olympiad.

In the break between the two rounds of the Olympiad, the staff of the department organized an excursion to the university museum, to the scientific laboratories of the university, and the participants also visited the meat, milk, butter processing workshops and the confectionery baking workshop of the technical faculty.  The results of the Olympiad were summed up with the following result:

A tour of the S. Seifullin KATU was arranged for the participants of the Olympiad. Career guidance work was carried out.

The students visited workshops for processing vegetable oil, meat processing, and dairy products. A fascinating and interesting conversation with schoolchildren was conducted and the work of these workshops was shown by the responsible ones – Kozhamsugurov K.M. and Kambarov T.A. The students visited the laboratory of biotechnology and molecular biology led by Kuhar E.V. the excursions were conducted by Zhumalin A.H. and Gadzhimuradova A. Also some of the students expressed a desire to visit the university museum.

In the experimental production laboratory of the Faculty of Agronomy, headed by Professor A.P. Nauanova, the staff told about the activities of the laboratory and about assisting production in the production of high-quality fertilizers. The students also visited the laboratory of V.T. Khasanov.

A report on the career guidance work of the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine

On the basis of the Lyceum school No. 15 in Astana, teachers of the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine of the S.Seifullin KAIU conducted career guidance work in the assembly hall on January 12, 2024.

Associate Professor of the department Bulekbaeva L.T., after showing a video about the university, supplemented the information about the achievements of the university. Professor Zhumadina Sh.M. spoke about the specialties of the Faculty of Agronomy and the features of dual education. The teacher Ismagulova A.B. organized the distribution of booklets and conducted a survey of graduates about the choice of specialty who want to enroll in the S.Seifullin KAIU. The meeting was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, graduates asked questions about the conditions of study at the military department, about the specialties of architecture, auditing and others, in general, 5 graduates out of 40 expressed a desire to study at our university. Zhanar Serikovna Moldagulova, responsible for the career guidance work of graduates of the school, as well as the graduates themselves, wished to meet at our university in the spring of this year in order to see and hear with their own eyes information on the areas of the university they are interested in.

In the future, such meetings will be organized both within the walls of our university and at this school. Following the meeting, we compiled a brief report.

On January 22, Associate Professor, PhD of the Department of Biology, Protection and Quarantine of Plants of the Faculty of Agronomy G.S.Aidarkhanova met with the leadership of Secondary School No. 31 in Astana to discuss an action plan for career guidance work with graduate students. Head teacher of the school R.D. Zhamaliev, senior biology teacher J.S.Saduakasov was introduced to the approved school plan and given recommendations to improve the effectiveness of career guidance.

On January 23, a meeting was held with 11th grade students, where they were familiarized with general information on the S.Seifullin KATSU. At this meeting, Associate Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Department of Biology, Protection and Quarantine of Plants of the Faculty of Agronomy G.S.Aidarkhanova showed slides, told about the features of the educational process at the university, about the achievements of students in the field of innovative developments.

On January 24, on the basis of the laboratory of the Faculty of Agronomy, the Scientific and Production Platform of Agricultural Biotechnology, an excursion was organized and conducted with schoolchildren who chose directions in the field of biology and chemistry. The guys were greeted by R.D.Abisheva, a member of the Board - Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. She spoke about the prospects of modern education and science for young people. The main focus was on solving food safety problems. Then, Director of NIP SHB, Doctor of Biological Sciences, acting Professor Kukhar E.V., researcher at NIP SHB, M.T.N., Gadzhimuradova A.M. They conducted the children through the laboratories of the NIP, showed modern devices and installations, told about the methods of research of plants, animals, microorganisms, and answered questions of interest. The tour was continued in the laboratories of the Faculty of Agronomy, where Professor V.T. Khasanov familiarized with the research, results, achievements of students on the available basis. Report on dual training of the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine

According to dual training at the Department of Biology, Plant Protection and Quarantine, in the 1st semester of the current 2023-2024 academic year, a group 01-077-20-13 on the discipline "quarantine organisms and measures to combat them" was held in the organization of Astana Nas LLP, located in Astana. Teacher: Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, senior lecturer Turganbaev T. A.

This organization has been specializing in the production and sale of high-quality plant protection products (pesticides) for more than 20 years. The company offers pesticides, seeds, plant growth regulators and has a wide range of both private and foreign products, as well as offers comprehensive effective plant protection solutions for almost all crops grown in our country.

In addition, in the 1st semester, classes in the form of dual training in the disciplines "methods of detecting and accounting for plant diseases" and "Herbology" were held at the scientific and production center of grain farming named after A. I. Baraev. Teacher: PhD, senior lecturer Utelbaev E. A.

In the 2nd semester of the 2023-2024 academic year, according to the educational program "phytosanitary safety" of the State Institution "territorial Inspection of the State Inspection Committee in the agro-industrial complex of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana" at the production facility "phytosanitary safety - "legislative and regulatory framework for plant protection and quarantine" for bachelors and "phytosanitary safety" for undergraduates it is planned conducting the disciplines "state security system".

Scientific direction

The department is developing the direction of phytosanitary monitoring and control of ornamental crop production. The research results are implemented into the educational process at all levels of education. In this direction, a set of OP 7M08110 - Phytosanitary control in decorative crop production has been developed and produced. Methodological and scientific content has been developed, including textbooks recommended by the RUMS, electronic textbooks with author's certificates, scientific articles in the journals Committee for Quality Assurance in the Field of Education of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and WoS and Scopus.   Konysbaeva D.T., Ph.D., associate professor, Gorbulya V.
